Barcelona

With warm, crystal-clear waters lapping its sandy shores and mountains nuzzling up to its northern edge, this glittering jewel in the Mediterranean is blessed with desirable geographical genes. From the buoyant, revamped port area to the atmospheric medieval streets of the Barri Gòtic and the beautiful Modernista buildings of the Eixample, Barcelona has it all. A host of treasure-filled museums, architectural wonders, lively beaches and enchanting squares provide the icing on the cake.

  • Cafè-Bar L’Antiquari

In summer, bask in the old town’s medieval atmosphere at the Plaça del Rei terrace. By night, sip Rioja in the intimate, rustic basement bodega.

  • The Fundació La Caixa’s impressive collection of contemporary art is housed in a former textile factory, designed by Modernista architect Puig i Cadafalch. The collection began in 1985 and assembles some 800 works by Spanish and foreign artists, which are shown in rotation along with temporary international exhibitions.

  • A wonderful tea house hidden away in the back streets near the Cathedral. Amazing range of teas, including the lovely sweet'n'spicy chai, and a relaxed atmosphere. A perfect oasis of refreshment.

  • Picasso, Tapiès and even Woody Allen have dined on Catalan fare at this long-time artists’ hang-out.

  • Taste the tantalizing tapas, including the finest cured hams, at this established eatery.

  • Legendary seafood/tapas bar in the Old City. Amazing atmosphere, rowdy and fun, but high-quality dining through and through!

  • The line-up at this traditional, boisterous tapas bar includes top-notch cured hams and sausages, truita de patates (potato omelette), fresh mariscs (shellfish) and an array of daily tapas specials, depending on what’s at the market. See Restaurants & Tapas Bars.

  • Girona’s oldest restaurant is also one of its most popular. Wild mushrooms used in traditional Catalan meat dishes add a magical touch.

  • A bit off the beaten track, but worth hunting out, this authentic Spanish eatery offers an excellent selection of tapas.

  • A savoury seafood option is calamars (squid) a la romana (deep-fried in batter) or a la planxa (grilled).
