Barcelona

With warm, crystal-clear waters lapping its sandy shores and mountains nuzzling up to its northern edge, this glittering jewel in the Mediterranean is blessed with desirable geographical genes. From the buoyant, revamped port area to the atmospheric medieval streets of the Barri Gòtic and the beautiful Modernista buildings of the Eixample, Barcelona has it all. A host of treasure-filled museums, architectural wonders, lively beaches and enchanting squares provide the icing on the cake.

  • Of all the cafés on Plaça de la Virreina, this one, with its outdoor terrace and tiny patio full of potted plants, is easily the most pleasant for a quiet and leisurely morning coffee and a sandwich.

  • Decked out in vintage fair-ground memorabilia, this striking bar rates high on novelty factor. Order a cuba libre while swaying in a swing. Lively atmosphere, unique setting.

  • An economical, any-time-of day option serving hundreds of types of flauta (thin baguettes).

  • Situated in a beautiful modernista building, La Llibertat market is the perfect place to experience real Barcelona life. Stalls are set side by side, selling everything from the freshest fruit and vegatables to local meat and fish.

  • Pick from a small but select array of used clothes and shoes, which may be anything from patent leather platforms to polka-dot Dr Martens.

  • What do the Pope, Jack Nicholson and legions of Barcelonins have in common? They buy their espadrilles (alpargatas ) here.

  • Housed in a converted locomotive factory in the Barri de Sant Andreu is Barcelona’s gleaming new shopping complex. The mall offers everything under one roof, with over 200 shops, a multiplex cinema, a bowling alley and fast-food eateries galore.

  • This lush old dancehall pulls in a varied crowd. Elderly couples waltz across the floor early on; later, a younger set try out everything from tango to salsa. The next big things in pop and dance often perform live Performing Arts & Music Venues.

  • Another reformed dance hall, La Paloma competes with Club Apolo for the latest rising stars in pop and dance music. It still has traditional tea dances with live orchestras, but this is strictly ballroom: two step, waltz, salsa, rumba and lots of cha cha cha.

  • A daring, surreal fantasyland, and Gaudí’s most remarkable civic work (La Pedrera).
