  • A great place for an economical breakfast. Delicious cup-cakes and muffins served with home-made jam and butter.

  • A Modernista palace provides an elegant setting for wonderfully presented Catalan food. The game dishes are sublime.

  • Take the city’s only tram to the top of Av Tibidabo for traditional Catalan food washed down with bold Riojas at this terrace restaurant.

  • Tuck into a generous buffet of rice, pasta, greens, chicken and more at this charming, long-running Eixample café-bookshop. Or opt for the well-priced vegetarian menu, including soup, salad and a main dish. An elegant, but informal, any time of the day option. See Cafés.

  • Laie Llibreria Cafè

A cultural meeting place with a lively atmosphere, airy terrace and foreign newspapers. There’s an excellent set lunch and live jazz (Mar–May: Tue).

  • Looking out over the Poble’s “village square”, this huge terrace restaurant offers stunning views and a good range of traditional Mediterranean dishes.

  • An unassuming, family-style restaurant with excellent, well-priced regional cuisine. Reputedly the best place to eat that Catalan speciality pig’s trotter. The broad bean salad with mint is recommended.

  • Organic Mediterranean dishes (many vegetarian) are served in this airy café-restaurant, which is popular with artists. Contemporary art is projected onto the wall.

  • A deli-style shop offering incredible breakfasts, including eggs with foie gras, at a huge communal table. Wine and traditional hams and cheeses are also available.

  • The seafood at this family restaurant, with its splendid terrace, includes typical paella and sípia a la planxa (grilled cuttlefish).
