  • This coastal institution is perched atop rugged cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean. It is run by the fourth generation of the same family. Many of the rooms – each individually decorated – have splendid vistas of the sea. There’s a large outdoor pool and breakfast is included.

  • Barcelona’s grande dame five-star hotel is mere steps from the sea, with ample, sumptuous rooms and top-notch eating places. The first-floor, outdoor pool has stunning views of the Med.

  • Behind the traditional frontage lies a modern, cozy hotel with free internet access in every room. The Cathedral, Picasso museum and Barceloneta beach are all close by.

  • Hotel Claris

This exquisite, 19th-century Eixample palace was once home to the counts of Vedruna. Inside, you’ll find a small museum of pre-Colombian art, part of the owner’s collection, some of which also decorates the suites. Guests get free admission to the nearby Museu Egipci (Museu Egipci), run by the hotel owner.

  • Hotel Colón

A handsome, family-owned Barri Gòtic hotel, the Colón has traditional decor with mirrors and oil paintings throughout. The views of the Cathedral and Plaça de la Seu from this homely, quaint place, are stunning.

  • Housed in a renovated mid-19th-century building, this modern hotel has bright rooms with tan-and-blue decor and dark wooden floors. Upper rooms offer views of the Cathedral and the Barri Gòtic.

  • Hotel Ducs de Bergara

Housed in a lovely 1898 Modernista building, this luxurious hotel has well-appointed rooms. There’s a large interior courtyard with a swimming pool.

  • Designed by architect Domènech i Montaner in 1899, this hotel is awash with Art Nouveau, including a restaurant rich with floral mosaics (Good Value Eats). The rooms, in contrast to the ground-floor splendour, are all modern, if a little frayed around the edges.

  • Set in an elegant 1873 mansion, this hotel has maintained its historical allure, with suitably old-fashioned decor in the lobby and first-floor sitting room. Some rooms have been modernized, while others have antique furniture. One room is in a converted chapel, with Gothic ceilings.

  • Most of the simple rooms at this popular place have wrought-iron balconies, ideal for taking in the all-day entertainment on La Rambla below. A continental buffet breakfast – served in a light, airy dining room – is included.
