Mercat de La Boqueria
-
Barcelona’s most famous food market is conveniently located on La Rambla (La Rambla). Freshness reigns supreme and shoppers are spoiled for choice, with hundreds of stalls selling everything from vine-ripened tomatoes to haunches of beef and moist wedges of Manchego cheese. The city’s seaside status is in full evidence at the fish stalls.

This market is a must see if you visit the city of Barcelona. Situated about halfway down La Rambla you will find it tucked slightly back from the road. The hustle and bustle of people going about their daily business and the smells of fresh fruit, fish and tapas will tell you that you are in the right place. The huge sign above the entrance proclaiming Mercat La Boqueria will confirm it for you! The market is huge and divided up into various sections, fruit and vegetables (fruites i verdures), meat (carn) and fish/seafood (peix/marisc) amongst others. What really strikes you on entering is the noise and also the colourful fruit and vegetable displays. All fruit and vegetables are displayed in magnificent rows of colours and you get the impression that the stallholders get there very early in the morning to ensure that their display is absolutely perfect. Woe betide a passing tourist who chooses the juiciest apple from the bottom of the pile, they could find themselves beneath a pile of fruit with an angry catalan fruitseller threatening them with a banana! Every meat imaginable is available and some of them require little imagination to think that they may have been breathing and running around but a few hours ago. The fish and seafood is amazing, here is where the catalans come for their famous stews and seafood preparations. Everything is so fresh and has that just caught air about it. If you have a couple of hours to spare I would recommend a stroll round La Boqueria, stop for a cafe amb llet with the locals. This is real Barcelona at its best!
