The log cabin, built in1819, was a present from King Friedrich Wilhelm III to his daughter Charlotte and his son-in-law, future Tsar Nicholas I. The wooden Russian-style dacha was restored after a fire in 1985.

Only 100 meters from Checkpoint Charlie you will find a small but very interesting shopping place, the boxoffberlin, or just bob. It's a shop, Café and gallery in one. The shop offers extraordinary souvenirs and cool gifts made by local designers (T-shirts, comics, music, films, games, post cards, toys, books...). The Café has coffee specialties based on organically grown and fair traded Espresso and an individual selection of soft drinks (e.g. Fritz Kola, Bionade) and beer (e.g. Berliner Weisse, Palast-Bier) and the gallery shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art, films and more from Berlin artists.

Berlin’s hippest Italian restaurant offers fresh fish and exceptional meat creations such as Bresaola di Cavallo (horsemeat with salad and nuts).

Everyone of importance, including the Chancellor himself, dines at Borchardt. The historic room is furnished in Wilhelminian style (featuring tall columns, wall mosaics and tile flooring) – an appropriate setting for the classic French cooking. Without a reservation, however, even top politicians can’t get a table (see Restaurants & Cafés) .

The 19th-century Botanical Garden is a paradise of flowers and plants in the centre of town. The vast area with 15 greenhouses was built in the late 19th century around gentle hills and picturesque ponds. In the Great Palm House by Alfred Koerner you can see spectacular orchids and giant Victoria water lilies, reaching a diameter of over 2 m (6 ft). The museum introduces visitors to the world of microbiology.

The tables of regulars are marked with brass plaques, but anyone will enjoy the French menu and outstanding wine list.

One of the only hotels in Berlin to be influenced by the Bauhaus, the Brandenburger Hof has free-swinging leather seats and ball-shaped lamps, forming an exciting contrast to the historic building.
