Berlin

Berlin is Germany’s liveliest city and one of the most fascinating capitals in the world. You’ll find no other place where art and culture, museums and theatres, entertainment and nightlife are more diverse and exciting than on the banks of the Spree River. Once reunited, Berlin quickly developed into a cosmopolitan city, and today there is an air of energy and vibrancy about it.

  • Some of Berlin’s most attractive villas, dating back to the 19th century, are found in the streets surrounding the Grunewald S-Bahn station. Especially worth seeing are Nos. 15 and 11 in Winklerstraße, the latter of which was built by Hermann Muthesius in the style of an English country mansion. Villa Maren, at No. 12 next door, is a beautiful example of the Neo-Renaissance style. The villas on Toni-Lessler-Straße and on Furtwänglerstraße are also worth a detour.

  • An intimate restaurant serving modern Turkish food.

  • An old favourite among the hip new clubs of the district, promising to take you “back to the roots”. Hot funk and soul rhythms are played.

  • Denkmal Benno Ohnesorg

Alfred Hrdlicka’s sculpture from 1971 commemorates the student Benno Ohnesorg, who was shot dead here during a demonstration on 2 April 1967.

  • Stylish Berliners shop here for up-to-the-minute and top-of-the-range designer clothes.

  • Berlin’s most recent fashion store is also the most expensive in town. Here, the man-about-town can purchase his Gucci or DKNY ties, while the lady tries on Versace or Calvin Klein gear on three floors in the Friedrichstadtpassagen (see Shops) .

  • This small boutique sells the latest streetwear and hip hop fashion of a local label.

  • Der Teeladen

A charming specialist tea shop opposite Nikolaikirche, always steeped in delicious scents.

  • If you prefer modern designs, this hotel is not for you – the rooms here are all classically styled. The Großer Kurfürst has successfully incorporated modern facilities into an historic building. It also features many useful extras, such as free public transport and bicycle hire.

  • A stylish hotel with classic decoration – oak-panelled walls and thick carpets and curtains adorn the rooms, which are arranged around an inner courtyard. Few hotels in town are better than this, and the service is very friendly.
