Berlin

Berlin is Germany’s liveliest city and one of the most fascinating capitals in the world. You’ll find no other place where art and culture, museums and theatres, entertainment and nightlife are more diverse and exciting than on the banks of the Spree River. Once reunited, Berlin quickly developed into a cosmopolitan city, and today there is an air of energy and vibrancy about it.

  • This slightly dated winery is still a big hit with tourists as well as groups of pupils and students. Try the sweetish strawberry and raspberry wines.

  • A fragment of the Berlin Wall, 1.3 km (1,422 yards) long, was left standing next to the Spree River. In 1990, 118 artists from around the world painted colourful images onto the grey concrete wall, making it a unique work of art. Particularly famous is a picture by the Russian artist Dmitri Vrubel, showing Leonid Brezhnev and the East German leader Erich Honecker, exchanging fraternal Socialist kisses. Much has faded due to exhaust fumes, but it is now being restored.

  • Eastern Comfort Hostel

Eastern Comfort Hostel has the prices and friendliness of a hostel, but is as nice as a hotel.

The hostel is located on a boat in the Spree River. It is next to the longest last standing part of the Berlin Wall and you actually have to walk through the wall to get there! There are lots of private rooms with bathrooms and most have a port-window view. Upstairs is a hip bar that is open to the public and is great to grab a snack and cocktails.

  • This small hotel, near Schloss Charlottenburg, is well suited to families, as some of its rooms have been specially designed for children’s play. A buffet breakfast is included in the price.

  • One of the classic day-trip destinations: families once used to “bring and brew their own coffee”. Today it is a popular outdoor café, often offering live music and dancing.

  • One of the few American-style restaurants in Berlin, with authentic decor and American regional dishes.

  • Café, pub and restaurant, especially popular with actors.

  • The landscaped English-style garden near Schloss Bellevue is ideal for strolling.

  • The curved Baroque palace, built in 1766 for the wealthy merchant Nathan Veitel Heinrich Ephraim, was once regarded as the city’s most beautiful spot. Rebuilt after the demolition of the old palace, it is now a museum, showing paintings by local artists.

  • Historic and new erotica.
