Berlin is Germany’s liveliest city and one of the most fascinating capitals in the world. You’ll find no other place where art and culture, museums and theatres, entertainment and nightlife are more diverse and exciting than on the banks of the Spree River. Once reunited, Berlin quickly developed into a cosmopolitan city, and today there is an air of energy and vibrancy about it.

This new memorial, officially called “Memorial to the Killed Jews of Europe”, serves as Germany’s national Holocaust memorial. After years of debate, US star architect Peter Eisenman completed the memorial in 2005. It is comprised of a large field with dark grey steles of varying heights up to 2 m (6 ft) high, which symbolize the six million Jews and others murdered by the Nazis in their concentration camps between 1933 and 1945. Underneath the memorial there is an information centre which explains the causes and history of the genocide.

Berlin’s top hotel ranks as one of the finest in Europe. A reconstruction of the historic Adlon hotel, it opened in 1997 and has become popular with celebrities and politicians from around the globe. Even if you are not going to stay here, you could have a cup of tea or coffee in the magnificent lobby.
-
Well-run establishment with an intimate atmosphere (there are only 18 rooms), popular with tourists on cultural visits. Rooms and lobby have been kept deliberately plain, which creates a slightly Spartan impression, but all needs are catered for.
-
A trendy hotel in a uniquely central location, on Ku’damm. The rooms are all surprisingly large, and the windows have been sound-proofed.
-
A medium-priced hotel near KaDeWe, offering a full office service with quiet rooms, a lovely pool with good views and an excellent buffet dinner.
-
You can find a more attractive room in other hotels, but you’ll be hard pushed to find one at such a low price and in such a central location, on Tauentzienstraße, opposite the KaDeWe department store.
-
A small hotel, popular with student and school groups, and therefore a little noisy at times. It is situated in a quiet square close to Ku’damm, where you will find several pubs and the UFA-Arthouse-Kino, which screens English-language films currently on release.
-
This hotel is a little more expensive than others in the same category, but the accommodation in green surroundings is perfect for families. The hotel is run by the Protestant church.
-
This small hotel on Gendarmenmarkt is based in a venerable town residence. The rooms, too, with their design and furnishings, seem to hark back to the 19th century, but in fact everything is brand-new. The hotel also boasts a sauna, pool and fitness facilities.
-
Luxury hotel in Tiergarten, recently renovated, with great views over the central park, this hotel is popular with business travellers. Although the building itself is not particularly attractive, the rooms are furnished in a timelessly elegant style. Its three restaurants offer first-class food, and the bars, pool and fitness area are also excellent.
