Berlin is Germany’s liveliest city and one of the most fascinating capitals in the world. You’ll find no other place where art and culture, museums and theatres, entertainment and nightlife are more diverse and exciting than on the banks of the Spree River. Once reunited, Berlin quickly developed into a cosmopolitan city, and today there is an air of energy and vibrancy about it.

The name of this small hotel with only 19 rooms may seem over the top, but this venue is ideally suited for young people and families. The rooms are basic but well cared for, and the service is efficient. The house is in a central spot, opposite Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche.

The furnishings in this medium-sized hotel-guesthouse are hopelessly stuck in the 1970s – and this is what makes it so charming. The service is very friendly, children and pets are both welcome, and the breakfast buffet is so generous that you won’t need to eat anything else for the rest of the day.
-
Slightly antiquated, venerable guesthouse close to Ku’damm, based in the apartment of the silent-film star Asta Nielsen. The rates are unbeatable, while furnishings and service are personal and friendly. There are only 15 rooms however, so it is advisable to book in advance.
-
Docked on the banks of the Spree are some of the remaining few houseboats in Berlin – an idyllic haven in the middle of the city.
-
This restaurant offers great views and Michelin-starred Mediterranean food.

The East German regime undertook a perfect restoration of this idyllic street for Berlin’s 750th anniversary celebrations. A stroll through the leafy roads lined with houses from the Gründerzeit (the years after the founding of the German Empire in 1871) is one of the nicest ways to experience Prenzlauer Berg. Ancient-looking street lamps and signs, cobbled streets, antiquated shop signs and a few atmospheric pubs take the visitor back to the late 19th century.
-
The paths and tracks in the northern half of the Großer Tiergarten park, as well as around the perimeters of Straße des 17 Juni, are excellent for inline-skating away from the traffic. Skating in the busy city streets – though practised – is officially forbidden.
-
This small hotel is full of modern works of art – even the showers are art installations. The rooms also have kitchens.
-
Featuring décor designed by an international artist, this modern and centrally located hostel opened in September 2007 - ideally suited for longer stays.
-
The latest in entertainment technology from around the world and high-tech toys for young and old are on show at the IFA (International Broadcasting Exhibition) in the ICC.
