Berlin

Berlin is Germany’s liveliest city and one of the most fascinating capitals in the world. You’ll find no other place where art and culture, museums and theatres, entertainment and nightlife are more diverse and exciting than on the banks of the Spree River. Once reunited, Berlin quickly developed into a cosmopolitan city, and today there is an air of energy and vibrancy about it.

  • The world’s largest tourism fair offers up-to-date information to the general public, often at elaborately designed stalls. The night-time shows put on by many of the exhibiting countries are especially popular.

  • German show-jumpers meet.

  • Germany’s biggest athletics festival.

  • The brothers Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm (1786–1859) Grimm are well known around the world, thanks to their collection of classic fairy tales including Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel . Equally important, however, was their linguistic output, the German Grammar and German Dictionary which are standard reference works even today.

  • The small gleaming white palace in Grunewald, dating back to 1542, served as a hunting lodge for the Electors. The castle, built in the Renaissance and Baroque styles, houses a small collection of German and Dutch paintings.

  • Jewish Cemetery

The small Jewish cemetery is one of the most charming cemeteries in the city. The tombstones lie or stand here amid dense scrub and high trees. The cemetery was set up in 1827, when the former Jewish cemetery in Große Hamburger Straße was closed. Two of the famous personalities who have found their final resting places here are the painter Max Liebermann (1847–1935) and the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791–1864).

  • Simple, elegant designer fashions for men and women are for sale at this upmarket, stylishly cool boutique.

  • One of the best Mexican restaurants in town, serving a range of tortillas, borritos and enchiladas.

  • This very Italian luxury hotel is in a brand new building on Friedrichstrasse that opened in 2002. Apart from its East Berlin location, the hotel’s main attractions are the spacious rooms, large lobby and inviting bar, all furnished with only the best materials.

  • In the western centre of the city is this Fitness Centre for Women, which guarantees a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere for exercise on standard equipment as well as many classes, away from prying eyes. The staff are very helpful.
