Berlin

Berlin is Germany’s liveliest city and one of the most fascinating capitals in the world. You’ll find no other place where art and culture, museums and theatres, entertainment and nightlife are more diverse and exciting than on the banks of the Spree River. Once reunited, Berlin quickly developed into a cosmopolitan city, and today there is an air of energy and vibrancy about it.

  • Bar jeder Vernunft

This venue, whose name means “devoid of all reason”, is Berlin’s most popular comedy theatre. The cabaret offers a humorous and, at times, romantic programme of songs and chansons , reviews, cabaret, slapstick and comedy, all based in an amazing mirror tent dating from the 1920s. Many stars of the international and German cabaret scene can be seen regularly among the performers here: for example Tim Fischer, Georgette Dee, the Pfister Sisters and Gayle Tufts, as well as older stars such as Otto Sander or Brigitte Mira.

  • A mixture of French, Italian and Austrian dishes are on offer here. There is always a good atmosphere under the S-Bahn arches; live jazz at weekends.

  • Fashion designer Wolfang Joop is a regular at this venue, which is based in an historic building and serves fresh Italian food, with delicious pasta dishes.

  • Much better than a youth hostel yet much cheaper than a guesthouse: in the BaxPax you’ll be sleeping in beds in decommissioned VW beetles, at under €20 per night. Plus you’ll meet young, friendly people from around the world (great for making friends). This dive is in deepest Kreuzberg, and not suitable for those over 30.

  • Berliner Mitwohnzentrale, an agency, arranges shared accommodation in private homes all over town, at low prices. You’ll normally have your own room with one or two beds. Quality varies considerably but the rooms are mostly priced at under €25 per night.

  • Lively Italian restaurant with a large terrace – ideal for people-watching in the open air.

  • The snack bars based in this small shopping arcade offer delicious foods that you can buy or sample on the spot.

  • Prestigious member of Berlin’s Blue-Band-Hotels, the Excelsior is characterized more by sober efficiency than by friendliness but hits the mark with moderate prices, excellent location and a vast range of business services.
