  • Both the hill and the lake, the dark green Teufelssee, are popular destinations for a day out at the weekend, for flying kites, biking and sunbathing.

  • One of few parks in the northeast of the city, dominated by Socialist prefabricated buildings. It has a giant monument to Ernst Thälmann, a communist who was murdered by the Nazis.

  • Theater des Westens

    This theatre is based in an attractive building from 1895–6. Renowned for its fare of light entertainment, it is regarded as one of Germany’s best musical theatres (see Performing Arts Venues) .

  • Tom’s Bar

    One of the traditional pubs in Berlin, in the centre of the city’s gay heart in Motzstraße, Tom’s Bar is not for those who are shy and timid; Tom’s Bar is a well-known pick-up joint. Below the (rather dark and dingy) Kneipe is a darkroom.

  • The Palace of Tears witnessed much heartbreak, when Western visitors parted from family or friends in the East after a visit. Today, the former checkpoint at S-Bahn station Friedrichstraße is a concert hall.

  • This narrow street is typical of the transformation of Scheunenviertel – trendy shops next to decaying façades.

  • The School of Art is one of the best German universities for the fine arts, architecture and design.

  • This building, resembling a mosque with minarets, houses the water pumping station for Schlosspark Sanssouci. The ancient pump, dating from 1842, can be inspected in the building.

  • The former headquarters of the porcelain and cutlery manufacturer WMF has remarkable façades, decorated with beautiful mosaics.

  • A trip to outer space – see stars, planets and galaxies under the silvery dome of the Planetarium.
