  • Basic apartment rooms in a small, slightly alternative guesthouse, based in an old tenement block. The “acksel haus” is near Kollwitzplatz, a popular area with young people.

  • Based in an historic building from the late 19th century, this hotel perfectly combines old and new features. The elegant rooms are decorated with plaster ceiling mouldings and equipped with timelessly sophisticated furnishings. This is a very pleasant hotel indeed, both to look at and to stay in.

  • A quiet classic, this hotel boasts attentive staff, rustic rooms and its own small beer garden in summer, all in an excellent location near the KaDeWe. Ask about special weekend rates. Non-smoking rooms available.

  • An old-fashioned but well-run guesthouse, based in a beautiful Art-Nouveau building. The rooms are furnished in a discreet modern style, and the hotel is typical of Berlin’s older buildings.

  • Art and women rule at this small guesthouse – the hotel is run by and for women and all the rooms are beautifully colour-coordinated. Regular exhibitions by women artists from Berlin are held.

  • A small hotel promising big things, and in terms of its furnishings at least it keeps these promises. The stylish 19th-century house, with sophisticated interior and excellent service, is popular with American visitors.

  • Berlin’s best designer hotel emphasizes every detail, and everything here has been styled, from the furniture to the soap in your bathroom. The walls of the historic building are decorated with paintings by Georg Baselitz. The hotel is centrally located, close to Nikolaiviertel.

  • A typically charming Berlin guesthouse, in the most attractive part of Mitte. You can even have your breakfast served in the room.

  • Much better than a youth hostel yet much cheaper than a guesthouse: in the BaxPax you’ll be sleeping in beds in decommissioned VW beetles, at under €20 per night. Plus you’ll meet young, friendly people from around the world (great for making friends). This dive is in deepest Kreuzberg, and not suitable for those over 30.

  • Berliner Mitwohnzentrale, an agency, arranges shared accommodation in private homes all over town, at low prices. You’ll normally have your own room with one or two beds. Quality varies considerably but the rooms are mostly priced at under €25 per night.
