  • 1. Hotel Adlon Berlin

Berlin’s top hotel ranks as one of the finest in Europe. A reconstruction of the historic Adlon hotel, it opened in 1997 and has become popular with celebrities and politicians from around the globe. Even if you are not going to stay here, you could have a cup of tea or coffee in the magnificent lobby.

  • 3. Grand Hyatt

Japanese minimalism is the style that was chosen for this new building on Potsdamer Platz. The spacious rooms overlook the Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, but if this is too mundane for you, you can always enjoy the fantastic views of the entire city from the hotel’s Olympus Wellness-Club.

  • 4. Schlosshotel im Grunewald

This small and very expensive palace hotel is situated in a quiet part of Grunewald, some distance from the centre. The hotel is popular with filmstars and celebrities wishing to get away from the crowds. Karl Lagerfeld designed the interior – and for a mere €1,500 you can even rent his permanent bedroom suite for one night.

  • 5. Kempinski Hotel Bristol Berlin

The grand old lady of West Berlin hotels, the Kempinski is beginning to show her age, but the glamour is still there and no hotel in town is better. All the rooms are furnished with a timeless elegance, while the lobby and bar are panelled in dark wood. In the Kempinski-Grill you can enjoy a glass of Sekt right on the Ku’damm while watching less fortunate mortals.

  • 6. Hackescher Markt

One of Berlin’s best hotels, the charming Hackescher Markt, is situated right in the popular Mitte district. Service and furnishings are of a four-star standard, yet the prices are moderate. Best of all is the hotel’s central location in one of Berlin’s liveliest areas: it is only a few steps away from the Hackesche Höfe and the Scheunenviertel.

  • 7. Ritz-Carlton Berlin

The new Ritz-Carlton Berlin near Potsdamer Platz is an ultraluxurious gem hidden behind a modern façade reminiscent of New York’s Rockefeller Center. The lobby, with its marble columns and tons of gold leaf, is a stunning setting for the Curtain Club and the Desbrosses brasserie. Its rooms are sumptuously decorated, all decorated to Prussian Neo- Classical designs – there are even telescopes to enjoy the cityscape.

  • 8. Dorint Hotel am Gendarmenmarkt

A quiet and elegant hotel with great views over the historic square, the relatively small Dorint has real style and offers excellent service. All the rooms are first-class and feature elegant furnishings (see Luxury Hotels) .

  • 9. Savoy Hotel

Greta Garbo used to stay at the Savoy, and the style of days gone by is celebrated throughout. Many filmstars are regulars in this hotel, which is justly proud of its service. The Savoy is famous for its Times Bar.

  • 10. Brandenburger Hof

An elegant town hotel, based in a 19th-century manor house. The lobby is traditionally furnished and the rooms are in a sobre Bauhaus-style. The Michelin-starred Quadriga restaurant specializes in French cuisine.
