  • 1. Green Door

This Berlin classic never goes out of style. A young urban crowd enjoys some of the best drinks and cocktails money can buy in Germany (the Mojito is a particular delight), mingling at the minimalist retro-style bar and along the curved, green walls. At weekends, the place is packed to bursting. There’s an outdoor bell, but the door policy is pretty liberal as long as you look sober.

  • 2. Strandbar Mitte

Despite its name, this bar is a Kneipe, where in the summer you can enjoy a cold beer or one of the inexpensive cocktails outdoors. Frequented by a young and trendy crowd who love to make a noise, the bar serves some of the best cocktails in Berlin.

  • 3. Hackbarths

Friendly Hackbarths is a corner pub frequented by trendy students, local artists and tourists. From 6pm, the locals gather here in jovial mood and are always ready to strike up conversation over a glass of Berliner Weiße (sour beer with a shot of raspberry or woodruff syrup). In the summer, the pavement serves as a makeshift extension of the pub.

  • 4. E & M Leydicke

This slightly dated winery is still a big hit with tourists as well as groups of pupils and students. Try the sweetish strawberry and raspberry wines.

  • 5. Morena-Bar

With its walls completely covered with Spanish tiles, this bar draws an upmarket Kreuzberg crowd as well as students who like to meet here for a beer. At weekends it is full to bursting and gets livelier by the hour.

  • 6. Zum Nußbaum

One of only a few traditional pubs in the historic Nikolaiviertel worth checking out, the Nußbaum serves draught beer and traditional Berlin food.

  • 7. Zwiebelfisch

A classic of the ageing Charlottenburg scene, this is where the last survivors of the 1968 generation prop up the bar and reminisce about the great days of the revolution in West Berlin. The artists in the photographs on the walls are all past clients, many of them from the 1968 generation. In the summer, there are tables outdoors on Savignyplatz – great for people-watching and taking in the scene.

  • 8. Diener-Tattersaal

An atmospheric pub popular with local actors, serving draught beers and traditional German and Austrian fare. The pub bears the name of Franz Diener, the legendary boxer who knocked out the erstwhile boxing world champion, Max Schmeling.

  • 9. Café am Neuen See

The only Berlin Kneipe that is also a café. The “Italian breakfast” is opulent and delicious. In summer, crowds gather in the vast beer garden. Customers bring their own food to grill and sit at the long tables, chatting over a local beer.

  • 10. Yva Suite

This bar and restaurant is popular for its superb cocktails and wines, plus its colourful clientele – mostly actors, film producers and aspiring writers. The dark wooden floors and naked walls are typical for Charlottenburg.
