Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent

The four great cities of northern Belgium share a rich cultural heritage dating back to medieval times, when this was one of the most vibrant trading regions in the world. Yet each is very different: Brussels is the new Capital of Europe, while Bruges is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. Ghent is a historic university city, while Antwerp still has the muscular stance of a great industrial centre. Each, in its own way, is richly rewarding – not only in cultural sights, but also in delightful and welcoming places to stay, eat and drink.

  • A celebrated old-world tavern, with a courtyard and even its own chapel; indulge, then repent.

  • With three Michelin stars, this is among Belgium’s top restaurants. Exquisite.

  • Boisterous, with a Bohemian edge that attracts all ages, this pub-café-brasserie occupies a fine 17th-century gabled house.

  • A friendly pub with live jazz most evenings until 2 or 3am. Exposed beams and brickwork create a cosy ambience.

  • De Orangerie

This delightful hotel occupies a converted 15th-century convent overlooking the canal; breakfast can be taken at the water’s edge. It is elegantly decorated in traditional style.

  • De Pauw

This pretty, family-run hotel, with its weathered brick exterior draped with flowers, is located close to the old parish church of St Giles, in the quiet and historic northern part of town – but still just a 10-minute walk from the centre. The interior is styled like a private home, with a welcome to match.

  • De Proeverie

This delightful little coffee shop belongs to the chocolatier opposite: hot chocolate is a speciality.

  • Part of the Relais & Châteaux organization, De Snippe is a stylishly decorated hotel located in a handsome old mansion. Its acclaimed restaurant (see De Snippe) overlooks a pretty garden.

  • De Snippe

This elegant restaurant in a good hotel (see Bruges Hotels: Pampered Luxury) has an attractive terrace and garden.

  • The sister hotel of De Orangerie, near the Groeningemuseum, has a sense of refined 18th-century urban elegance – and a swimming pool.
