Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent

The four great cities of northern Belgium share a rich cultural heritage dating back to medieval times, when this was one of the most vibrant trading regions in the world. Yet each is very different: Brussels is the new Capital of Europe, while Bruges is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. Ghent is a historic university city, while Antwerp still has the muscular stance of a great industrial centre. Each, in its own way, is richly rewarding – not only in cultural sights, but also in delightful and welcoming places to stay, eat and drink.

For a list of the best art galleries and museums (see Art Galleries and Museums)
  • A quiche-like tart, made with leeks.

  • Tucked away in a quiet street to the east of Sint-Baafskathedraal is this fetching budget hotel. It is especially good value for families with three to five sharing.

  • This big, rollicking, noisy late-summer fun fair set out along the Boulevard du Midi has the newest rides plus dodgems, roller coasters and all the other old favourites.

  • The magnificent ancient beech forests of Soignes provide a splendid landscape for walking or cycling – particularly in autumn, when the beech trees turn golden. There are two arboretums, at Groenendaal and Tervuren, and an information centre on the site of the 14th-century Abbaye de Rouge-Cloître.

  • Georges Minne’s best-known work.

  • Upbeat, centrally located modern bar on two levels. Light meals – but emphatically no French fries!

  • Belgian frites (fries) are, quite simply, the best in the world. They are deep-fried in good-quality oil not once but twice, so they end up golden brown and bien croustillantes (crisp). Frites can be a side-dish or – served with a dollop of mayonnaise – a meal in themselves.

  • There’s been a frietkot (chip/French fries stand) on the Markt since 1896. This one does good crispy fries (with mayonnaise, of course), plus a range of accompaniments.

  • Old-established chip stand serving perfect chips (fries) and all the trimmings.

  • Gustav Klimt’s mosaic masterpieces in the dining room of the Palais Stoclet are rarely on public view (see Palais Stoclet).
