Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent

The four great cities of northern Belgium share a rich cultural heritage dating back to medieval times, when this was one of the most vibrant trading regions in the world. Yet each is very different: Brussels is the new Capital of Europe, while Bruges is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. Ghent is a historic university city, while Antwerp still has the muscular stance of a great industrial centre. Each, in its own way, is richly rewarding – not only in cultural sights, but also in delightful and welcoming places to stay, eat and drink.

For a list of the best art galleries and museums (see Art Galleries and Museums)
  • 1920s–1930s. A brash, angular but glamorous style. Name is based on a decorative arts exhibition in Paris in 1925.

  • Late 19th–early 20th centuries. A florid, organic style, an effort to create an utterly new approach: hence “new art”.

  • A leading violinist of his era (1921–86).

  • Astoria

With its palatial lobby and spectacular public rooms, the Astoria looks 18th-century, but was built in 1909. It stands in the Upper Town, near the Royal Palace. Churchill and Eisenhower stayed here. A flagship of the Accor group’s Sofitel chain.

  • This is a large and well-run hotel, close to the Centraal Station, east of the city centre. It offers extensive conference facilities, and is well suited to the business traveller. It has a fitness suite and swimming pool.

  • Workshop producing plaster-cast copies of classic sculptures.

  • A well-run, modern hotel not far from Place Sainte-Catherine, Place Saint-Géry and the Grand Place, the Atlas offers off-peak bargains on its website.

  • Founded in 1921, Aux Armes de Bruxelles is an institution: white-linen elegance and impeccable Belgian cooking.

  • Top-name international couturiers cluster around the Place Louise, while more boutiques lie within a covered arcade that connects the Avenue de la Toison d’Or to the Avenue Louise.

  • Baldwin (d. 878) became the first Count of Flanders, making Bruges his stronghold.
