  • Café Vlissinghe

Said to be the oldest Bruges tavern, founded 1515. Van Dyck apparently met local painters here. Serves light lunches. There’s a boules court in the garden.

  • Bruges has limited night life, but this jazz café has a welcoming crowd and good basic cooking.

  • A famous old staminee (pub), at the foot of a folksy little alleyway. Also serves light snacks.

  • De Proeverie

This delightful little coffee shop belongs to the chocolatier opposite: hot chocolate is a speciality.

  • Just off the Markt, this is one of the few genuine bars – as opposed to brasseries – in central Bruges and so popular with the locals.

  • A fun café-bar with low-lit tables and comfy chairs. Hosts occasional free concerts.

  • A glamorous café-bar, frequented by an equally glamorous clientele. Drinks, cocktails and delicious light meals.

  • A laid-back pub serving good beer, and wholesome snacks and meals. Live jazz and other music are regularly staged.

  • A spacious cybercafé in the medieval Sint-Janshospitaal complex. The terminals are set among polished “colonial-style” wood and brass.

  • One of the great beer pubs, serving no fewer than 300 types of beer. If you can’t make your mind up, just ask the bar staff. If you want to learn more, try one of their beer seminars.
