  • 1. Café ’t Volkshuis

A traditional café-pub, excellent value and especially good for lunch. It is also a popular venue for sing-along evenings.

  • 2. Het Dagelijks Brood

Or “Le Pain Quotidien” in French. Part of an esteemed chain providing wholesome sandwiches on crusty bread, plus pâtisserie and other snacks.

  • 3. Taverne De Verloren Hoek

A traditional, pleasant and welcoming tavern named after its location in the “Lost Corner” of eastern Bruges.

  • 4. De Belegde Boterham

The name translates as “open sandwich”, which is exactly what they do – along with soups, salads and cakes.

  • 5. Salade Folle

A deservedly popular lunch spot and tearoom serving light dishes, home-made cakes, pancakes and waffles. You need to get there early for lunch.

  • 6. Frituur de Vier Winden

There’s been a frietkot (chip/French fries stand) on the Markt since 1896. This one does good crispy fries (with mayonnaise, of course), plus a range of accompaniments.

  • 7. Bistro de Eetkamer

Elegant but unflashy, this very popular bistro passes the locals’ rigorous standards with its good-value food.

  • 8. ’t Nieuw Museum

In this old family-run tavern, the meat is cooked on an open fire (evenings) in a 17th-century fireplace – a delightfully elemental experience.

  • 9. Gran Kaffee de Passage

A wonderfully dingy, candle-lit interior provides an enchanting setting for good beer and solid, good-value Belgian dishes.

  • 10. Het Andere Idee

A comfortable “pasta-bistro”, popular with locals and well-priced.
