  • The Adornes is set in a renovated set of 16th-to 18th-century mansions overlooking the canal in the quieter, eastern part of the city, yet within walking distance of the centre. The decor, with its exposed beams, has the fresh-faced appeal of rustic charm. Guests have free use of bicycles.

  • This modern hotel lies in a convenient location close to the Rubenshuis, and is a short walk from the cathedral via some of the best shopping streets.

  • Smart, comfortable and efficient, the Amigo occupies the site of a 16th-century city prison near the Grand Place. Its interior is in Spanish Renaissance style.

  • A tidy, modern and reasonably-priced hotel overlooking the river (and road), the Antigone is conveniently placed for the Grote Markt and cathedral, as well as some of the clubs, bars and restaurants just north of the city centre.

  • A modern block in the east of the city, about 15 to 20 minutes’ walk from Sint-Baafskathedraal, provides moderately priced rooms. The hotel is divided into apartments, as well as conventional rooms, all of which are available for one night or longer stays. It also has a restaurant, which, given its location, is useful.

  • Astoria

With its palatial lobby and spectacular public rooms, the Astoria looks 18th-century, but was built in 1909. It stands in the Upper Town, near the Royal Palace. Churchill and Eisenhower stayed here. A flagship of the Accor group’s Sofitel chain.

  • This is a large and well-run hotel, close to the Centraal Station, east of the city centre. It offers extensive conference facilities, and is well suited to the business traveller. It has a fitness suite and swimming pool.

  • A well-run, modern hotel not far from Place Sainte-Catherine, Place Saint-Géry and the Grand Place, the Atlas offers off-peak bargains on its website.

  • This “International Youth Hotel” is popular, energetic and friendly. Located in the east of the city, a 15-minute walk from the centre, it prides itself on its cheap accommodation, its well-priced restaurants and bar, and its cybercafé.

  • A small but attractive hotel, stacked vertically on the narrow footprint of an 18th-century mansion. The rooms are straightforward but pleasant, the public rooms attractive. Above all, the welcome is friendly and helpful. The location – close to the Koningin Astridpark – is conveniently central. Look out for special offers on their website.
