  • De Witte Lelie

One of the loveliest small hotels in Belgium – and, let’s face it, the world. Three 17th-century canal houses have been imaginatively transformed into a deeply attractive, modern hotel of 10 rooms, full of charming touches and surprising spaces. White and natural wood predominate. Relaxed, stylish, interesting.

  • Des Eperonniers

A stone’s throw from the Grand Place, this hotel is excellent value, particularly for families or groups of up to six sharing. Occupying part of an old mansion house, it has some beamed rooms reminiscent of a baronial hall. The hotel’s welcoming and friendly atmosphere is in tune with the young crowd it attracts. The cheapest rooms have shared bathroom facilities.

  • This smart, modern hotel, overlooking the canal in the quieter, eastern part of town, is a member of the Golden Tulip group. Unusually, it has a Japanese restaurant. It also has a gym, a sauna and Turkish baths.

  • A small hotel in a row of 15th-century houses overlooking the canal, Die Swaene is right in the centre of Bruges, close to the Burg. Four-poster beds, swimming pool and an excellent restaurant.

  • Close to the heart of European government and the Cinquantenaire, this hotel is favoured by diplomats, politicians and journalists, who make full use of its state-of-the-art communication systems, fitness centre, Turkish baths and sauna.

  • This small hotel in a historic house has one of the most attractive locations in town, with a pretty little square, the Huidenvettersplein, on one side, and a classic view over the canals on the other. The rooms are basic but comfortable.

  • The Egmond feels like a world apart, set in its own little tree-shaded park next to the Minne-water, in the south of the town. The step-gabled façades and manor-house style give it a neo-baronial air.

  • Erasmus

There is antique charm in abundance in this small hotel. A late 16th-century patrician’s house, it retains many of its original features. The owners are welcoming, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Just west of the city centre.

  • Tucked away in a quiet street to the east of Sint-Baafskathedraal is this fetching budget hotel. It is especially good value for families with three to five sharing.

  • A small, friendly hotel in a 19th-century maison de maître, with touches of old-world English charm, the George V lies to the west of the Grand Place, close to the lively cafés and bars of Place Saint-Géry.
