  • The location of this hotel, overlooking the pretty Place du Grand Sablon, is one of its main selling points – that, and the fact that it offers the first-class facilities of this stylish Italian chain. Elegant, modern and comfortable. At weekends, room rates drop by 50 per cent.

  • Although its 1000 post code suggests central Brussels, this hotel is halfway along Avenue Louise, close to the Musée Horta. Its mixture of elegance and efficiency is reflected in its room prices.

  • There is no other place quite like this in Brussels: an utterly charming and fascinating small hotel in the late-17th-century residence of the Spanish ambassador. It has a number of suites – named after Belgian artists – ingeniously devised beneath the roof beams, and furnished with a mixture of antique charm and modern flair.

  • Le Plaza

You feel a bit like a guest of Louis XVI in the palatial foyer and public rooms of this recently renovated hotel, with its stucco, gilt, and lavish ceiling paintings. The rooms maintain the same high standard of spacious comfort.

  • The 18th-century Neo-Classical exterior conceals an even older interior, with a vaulted medieval cellar in which guests breakfast. This was once the lodge of the merchants of Lucca – with connections to Giovanni Arnolfini, the banker who features in Jan van Eyck’s famous painting, The Arnolfini Marriage . The rooms are quaintly old-fashioned – a fact reflected in the attractive room price.

  • This spectacularly styled hotel feels like a large and elegant private home. Many of the rooms are characterful suites, some with private roof terraces. Located south of the city centre, outside the Pentagon.

  • Impressive addition to the Marriott chain, located near the Bourse and the Grand Place, ideally located for business, shopping and leisure.

  • This self-styled “small grand hotel” is just off Avenue Louise, near the Place Louise shopping area. Comfortable and stylish, it is part of the Spanish Melía group.

  • Brussels’ best-known hotel is a glittering belle époque building updated to top modern standards. Centrally located, not far from the Grand Place.

  • Navarra

The former trading house of the merchants of Navarre is now a hotel of unusual elegance sited to the north of the Markt. A member of the Best Western group, it offers a high standard of service and comfort, including a fitness centre and swimming pool.
