  • The heart of a pedestrianized area which contains attractive specialist shops of all kinds.

  • Famous boutique carrying the top names.

  • Markets

General markets are in the Markt (Wednesday mornings) and on ’t Zand (Saturday mornings). There is also a small but magical Christmas market in the Markt. Flea markets are held weekend afternoons on Dijver and at the Vismarkt.

  • The main shopping street is a broad pedestrianized avenue, fronted largely by high-street chain stores.

  • A good place to snoop for fashion at a slightly lower pitch than the designer boutiques.

  • Wall-to-wall diamond and jewellery shops in the Jewish quarter. Fascinating, partly because there’s nothing romantic about it – the gems are commodities like any other.

  • There are antique shops fronting onto the square, but try poking around in some of the side passages as well. Two of the finest chocolatiers, Wittamer and Marcolini, are here (see Wittamer, Pierre Marcolini).

  • This fine shop sells old prints, many of them of Bruges.

  • Ignore the shoddy environs: this is the place for cutting-edge fashion. All the Antwerp designers are represented in the shops here, and there are several outlets for notable Belgian fashion labels.

  • The Place du Jeu de Balle has a daily flea market (6am–2pm). In recent years, shops selling antiques, junk and curios have spread up the Rue Blaes to the north.
