  • A pedestrianized shopping street close to the city centre, with many of the main European fashion chains and a large Inno department store at the northern end.

  • Another street of recherché boutiques and shoe shops, including a branch of the ultimate Belgian accessories manufacturer Delvaux. Smell that leather!

  • An elegant modern arcade shares space with the Hilton hotel in the shell of a former department store.

  • The main shopping area links the Markt to ’t Zand. Clothes, shoes, chocolates – they’re all here.

  • The major supermarkets (such as Louis Delhaize) are in the suburbs, but a few small ones, such as Profi, lie within the city.

  • Bruges has two well-known breweries, De Gouden Boom and De Halve Maan. The Bottle Shop sells their beers, plus the full Belgian range.

  • There are still some lacemakers in Bruges, though not the 10,000 there were in 1840. For the genuine article go to a reliable outlet such as this, the oldest (founded 1923) and smallest.

  • Good for the whole gamut of Tintin merchandise.

    What looks more like an art gallery than a clothes shop is the showcase for fashion designer Walter van Bierendonck, as well as other select labels.

  • This warren of arcades between Zuidzandstraat and Noordzandstraat consists mainly of clothes boutiques.
