  • A stone’s throw from the MUHKA modern art gallery, Demeulemeester’s shop displays the uncompromising edge that has placed her at the forefront of fashion.

  • Top-name international couturiers cluster around the Place Louise, while more boutiques lie within a covered arcade that connects the Avenue de la Toison d’Or to the Avenue Louise.

  • Chocoladehuisje

There are chocolate shops at every turn in Bruges. The big names are on Steenstraat and Zuidzandstraat, but try the Chocoladehuisje for its imaginative (sometimes lewd) designs.

  • From early December to early January, this market offers all things Christmassy – crafts, decorations, presents – in the streets to the west of the Grand Place and around the Bourse.

  • This maze-like covered arcade sells T-shirts, baseball caps, leather goods, costume jewellery and incense – all surprisingly in the lower price range.

  • Galerie Bortier

This is a small, rather dowdy sister to the Galeries Royales de Saint-Hubert. Here you’ll find second-hand books, prints, postcards and posters.

  • Another covered arcade of up-market boutiques close to the Porte de Namur.

  • Galeries Royales de Saint-Hubert

A spectacularly elegant and spacious shopping arcade built in 1847 (see Galeries Royales de Saint-Hubert).

  • Het Modepaleis

This elegant belle époque “flat iron” building is the main outlet for one of Antwerp’s most fêted fashion designers, Dries van Noten.

  • Bruges is so picturesque that it attracts numerous artists, and several excellent shops cater for their needs. This one has been run by the same family for three generations.
