  • 1. Le Roy d’Espagne

A famous watering-hole in the old bakers’ guildhouse. There is a medieval air to the interior decor. Also serves light meals.

  • 2. La Chaloupe d’Or

An elegant café and restaurant in the old tailors’ guild-house. A good spot for a light lunch, an afternoon beer or a slice of fine pâtisserie.

  • 3. Le Métropole (Le Dixneuvième)

A wonderfully grand café and bar belonging to Brussels’ grandest hotel – and neither outrageously expensive nor intimidating. A place to watch and be watched.

  • 4. A La Mort Subite

“Sudden Death” may sound alarming, but this famous bar, redesigned in Rococo style in 1926, is named after a dice game. It is also the name of a gueuze beer (see Types of Belgian Beer).

  • 5. Le Falstaff

This celebrated café and brasserie-restaurant is famed for its Art Nouveau detailing, but it also has a robust, tavern-like atmosphere in keeping with its Shakespearean name.

  • 6. Chez Toone

Hidden away from the tourist throngs, the famous Toone puppet theatre (see Théâtre Royal de Toone, Brussels) has an atmospheric bar serving decent beers and light meals.

  • 7. La Fleur en Papier Doré

A rare survivor among the traditional pubs known as estaminets . Pictures and inscriptions recall its connections with the Surrealist movement.

  • 8. Wittamer

The world-class chocolatier has seating where you can sample its heavenly products with a cup of tea or coffee.

  • 9. Du Mim

The Musée des Instruments de Musique’s spectacular rooftop café (see Musée des Instruments de Musique).

  • 10. A la Bécasse

The decor may not be as authentic as its history, but this is a good place to sample traditional brews and authentic pub food.
