Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp and Ghent

The four great cities of northern Belgium share a rich cultural heritage dating back to medieval times, when this was one of the most vibrant trading regions in the world. Yet each is very different: Brussels is the new Capital of Europe, while Bruges is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. Ghent is a historic university city, while Antwerp still has the muscular stance of a great industrial centre. Each, in its own way, is richly rewarding – not only in cultural sights, but also in delightful and welcoming places to stay, eat and drink.

  • these are in the second square in centre of brugge and are handy if you need a quick snack and are very cheap. you can get sausage and chips (FRITTES IN BELGIUM) or chips and mayonaisse for just a few euros.

  • Arcadi

If you're brave enough to withstand the terrible service, the food is exceptional and its perfectly located for a lunchtime break. Delicious quiches, including aubergine (eggplant), courgette, chicken and coriander, spinach and courgette can be followed with divine puddings and leisurely drinks.

  • Café Vlissinghe

The oldest pub in Bruges - Built 1515

Make sure you have a pint of the local beer Straffe Hendrik - it's very good!

  • Located at 185 Chaussée d’Ixelles, this place is both trendy and romantic. There are lots of comfy sofas in the back and the cocktails are great!

  • Cheap but very tasty food, an excellent ambience, outdoor and indoor eating (non-smooking inside!) and great staff who don't rush you or force the food or menu down your throats. Fab!

  • Unfortunately, I can't remeber the name of the restaurant, but it's next to the Merode Metro station and they serve very cheap, very filling and very nutritious Lebanese food (especially the especially yummy Fatoush salad!)

  • Visit the home of the famous Belgian surrealist, Rene Magritte, and if you are lucky and time your visit well you may even have the tour guide to yourself.

  • Italian restaurant just off the Grand Place Eat on the main level at the big table with others... you meet some very interesting people there.. food is excellent, so is the ambiance, very casual - we ate there twice in 6 nights...excellent wine selection

  • Finally, a typical Belgian restaurant in the heart of Brussels, without the tourist prices or presence. Fantastic food, friendly staff and a nice buzz to the place. We'll definitely be back!

  • The English Theatre of Bruges

The English Theatre of Bruges is a charming theatre providing English-language productions in the heart of Bruges. The theatre is open all year round with all shows starting at 8pm every night (except Mondays) and all tickets are just 10 euros each. The performances are of a very high quality and the theatre is located in a charming old cinema with very comfortable chairs and a warm atmosphere. A splendid night out and definitely great value for money.
