Top 10 Bruges Hotels: Budget
-
1. Botaniek
A small but attractive hotel, stacked vertically on the narrow footprint of an 18th-century mansion. The rooms are straightforward but pleasant, the public rooms attractive. Above all, the welcome is friendly and helpful. The location – close to the Koningin Astridpark – is conveniently central. Look out for special offers on their website.
-
2. Patritius
Given its prices, the Patritius occupies a surprisingly grand 19th-century mansion located to the north-east of the Markt.
-
3. Ter Brughe
The area just north of the Augustijnenrei canal is a charming web of old streets. This well-run hotel occupies a 16th-century house overlooking the canal. The breakfast room is the brick-vaulted cellar.
-
4. Ter Duinen
This small hotel may seem a little out of the way in the north of the city, but the centre of Bruges is only a 15-minute walk away. The well-presented rooms are double-glazed and air-conditioned. The public rooms are stylish and welcoming.
-
5. Lucca
The 18th-century Neo-Classical exterior conceals an even older interior, with a vaulted medieval cellar in which guests breakfast. This was once the lodge of the merchants of Lucca – with connections to Giovanni Arnolfini, the banker who features in Jan van Eyck’s famous painting, The Arnolfini Marriage . The rooms are quaintly old-fashioned – a fact reflected in the attractive room price.
-
6. Ter Reien
Fetchingly perched beside the canal a little to the east of the Burg, Ter Reien is noted for the quality of its rooms, its service and, above all, its value for money.
-
7. De Pauw
This pretty, family-run hotel, with its weathered brick exterior draped with flowers, is located close to the old parish church of St Giles, in the quiet and historic northern part of town – but still just a 10-minute walk from the centre. The interior is styled like a private home, with a welcome to match.
-
8. Passage
Interesting budget hotel with just 14 rooms, styled with exotic and Bohemian flair. It also has an adjacent “youth hotel”, with cheaper prices. It is attached to the equally alluring Gran Kaffee de Passage (see Gran Kaffee de Passage).
-
9. Bauhaus Hotel
This “International Youth Hotel” is popular, energetic and friendly. Located in the east of the city, a 15-minute walk from the centre, it prides itself on its cheap accommodation, its well-priced restaurants and bar, and its cybercafé.
-
10. Charlie Rockets
Youth hotel in a converted cinema, fronted by a big, raucous café-bar serving nachos and burgers to the beat of rock. Basic rooms, but keenly priced – especially given the location, just to the east of the Burg.
