Top 10 Ghent Hotels
-
1. Erasmus
There is antique charm in abundance in this small hotel. A late 16th-century patrician’s house, it retains many of its original features. The owners are welcoming, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Just west of the city centre.
-
2. Gravensteen
Occupying a grand 19th-century mansion close to the centre, this is one of Ghent’s most refined and sophisticated hotels. The public rooms have been refurbished in glittering Second Empire style, while the rooms have a simple elegance.
-
3. Sofitel Gent Belfort
The Sofitel chain certainly knows how to deliver stylish comfort. The Belfort has all the facilities of a hotel of this rank, including a fitness room and sauna, and is very centrally located, opposite the Stadhuis.
-
4. Cour St-Georges/ Sint-Jorishof
This venerable old institution claims to be the oldest hotel in Europe, dating back as far as 1228. The rooms in the main building have the dingy quaintness of an old inn, but there is a more modern annexe.
-
5. Aparthotel Castelnou
A modern block in the east of the city, about 15 to 20 minutes’ walk from Sint-Baafskathedraal, provides moderately priced rooms. The hotel is divided into apartments, as well as conventional rooms, all of which are available for one night or longer stays. It also has a restaurant, which, given its location, is useful.
-
6. Ibis Gent Centrum Kathedraal
Right in the centre of Ghent, overlooking Sint-Baafskathedraal, this is a well-run, modern and attractive member of the reliable Ibis chain.
-
7. Ibis Gent Centrum Opera
This second Ibis hotel is located to the south of the centre, about 10 minutes’ walk from Sint-Baafskathedraal. Although somewhat functional, it is well-run and popular. If driving, be sure to ask for directions, as Ghent’s one-way system is maddening and makes access to the hotel something of a challenge.
-
8. Poortackere Monasterium
Here is a interesting experience: a hotel in a converted convent. An air of tranquillity pervades the (largely 19th-century) buildings and grounds. A special place, enhanced by a warm welcome and a relaxed atmosphere – and a convenient location just west of the city centre.
-
9. Flandria
Tucked away in a quiet street to the east of Sint-Baafskathedraal is this fetching budget hotel. It is especially good value for families with three to five sharing.
-
10. NH Ghent
A comfortable, modern hotel – as you would expect from the NH chain. It lies in a rather remote location 1.5 km (1 mile) from Sint-Baafskathedraal.
