  • Parque Punta Sur, Cozumel

A very large area across the southern tip of Cozumel with an impressive variety of landscapes – forest, dunes, turtle beaches, snorkeling reefs, and tranquil mangrove lagoons – plus crocodiles, flamingos, and countless other birds. There are observation towers, an information center, and a maritime museum, and you can climb the Punta Celaraín lighthouse (see Parque Punta Sur).

  • These come in many varieties and sizes, but most are very colorful and look as if they are smiling amiably.

  • Playa del Carmen

The hippest and fastest-growing spot on the Mayan Riviera, with good shopping, strolling, bar-hanging, and people-watching opportunities in town, and miles of wonderful palm-lined bays stretching away to the north. To the south, the Playacar development has its own, narrower beaches (see Playacar).

  • Playa del Carmen

The Riviera’s most vibrant street life, by day and night, and its hippest crowds can be found in its fastest-growing resort town. Playa’s long-established cool bars and backpackers’ haunts now mix with modern hotels ranging from big resorts to cosy guest houses. As well as having wonderful beaches, it’s great for diving and snorkeling.

  • Playa del Carmen

Playa’s main town beach is the place to go to survey other sun worshippers, and to showcase your skills at beach volleyball and other seaside pursuits.

  • Many Playa dive shops also arrange fishing trips, especially in the sailfishing season (Mar–Jun).

  • Playa is the base for several very high-standard dive operators, who take beginners’ groups and experienced divers to the reefs nearby and elsewhere along the Riviera.

  • A short way south of Puerto Morelos, this big, broad, white sand beach is mostly fronted by private villas, with scarcely any hotels, so there’s never any shortage of space.

  • A great place to find space to stretch out in Cancún, with huge banks of white sand above pounding ocean surf. There’s an amazing view north along the beachscape of Cancún Island.

  • The beach bums’ favorite on Isla – a compact strip of white sand with plenty to keep you entertained, from pedalos, kayaks, and snorkeling, to great bars for laid-back socializing under the palms.
