  • Another infusion, this one of the vegetable chaya (see Crepas de Chaya), best mixed with water and a little lemon juice.

  • Enormously refreshing local product – an infusion of dried flowers of jamaica (a kind of hibiscus), diluted to make a delicious tall drink.

  • One of old Mérida’s loveliest patios houses this relaxing restaurant, which has a half-vegetarian menu, including several dishes made with the special Yucatecan vegetable chaya.

  • A rumbustious village bar with a salsa soundtrack. The men of El Cuyo go out to fish before dawn, and when they come back many spend much of the day by the beach at La Conchita, which serves up wonderful grilled fish.

  • Lorenzillo’s, CancúnOne of the finest waterfront restaurants in Cancún, Loren-zillo’s is built on the lagoon. The menu includes fresh lobster, cray-fish, and crabs.

  • Highly regarded Cajun and Creole cooking, served in a lovely tropical garden that’s beautifully lit at night.

  • The best of the ever-popular terrace restaurants on Parque Hidalgo. If the bustle of the square gets too much you can sit inside in the hotel’s pretty patio.

  • One of the island’s oldest restaurants, in a wooden house just off the square. To eat, there are classic Yucatecan dishes (see Dishes of the Yucatán), at low prices.

  • The best restaurant on Cozumel’s east coast, and a wonderful place to eat on the beach.

  • Chen Río, Cozumel

With a fine beach all to itself, you can spend a leisurely afternoon here watching the waves and picking over the house specialty, a huge platter of mixed seafood, or sampling the excellent ceviches and salads .
