  • Crisp tortilla chips, baked in a cheese sauce with tomato, onions, herbs, chili, and shredded chicken or turkey.

  • Around the bazaar on the square (see Shops, Markets, and Tours) there’s a line of self-service food counters. Noisy, with lots of atmosphere, this is a great place for breakfast, and for local snacks.

  • This big terrace-restaurant has a straightforward style, but its fresh local seafood is some of the best in town.

  • One of Tulum’s longest-established restaurants, with a big outdoor terrace, and one of the best places for traditional Yucatecan and Mexican dishes.

  • The perfect place to cool off after a tour of Chichén Itzá. Tables beneath a palm roof strewn with colorful streamers, an atmosphere that’s relaxed, tasty food, and drinks aplenty.

  • El Mesón del Marqués, Valladolid

Valladolid’s foremost hotel also has its most distinguished restaurant, with tables around a plant-filled patio. Its versions of local specialties like pollo oriental de Valladolid (see Pollo Oriental de Valladolid) are definitive.

  • The restaurant in the Quinta Real hotel (see Ecotel Quinta Regia, Valladolid) is cool and pretty. Its menu makes use of fresh local ingredients, including produce from the hotel garden.

  • Gringo Dave’s, Tulum

Despite the name, this fun beach-barbecue is Mexican-run. Its food is mainly Mexican too – specialties are good-value platters of flame-grilled fresh fish, seafood, or meats.

  • Hacienda Ochil

A restaurant in a restored hacienda, offering finely prepared traditional Yucatecan dishes on a delightful terrace.

  • Hacienda San José Cholul

This restaurant is located in a colonial-style hacienda with traditional furniture and a beautiful garden. The menu offers Yucatecan specialties and international cuisine. Guests can dine on the terrace or in one of the many romantic spots in the lush, tranquil garden. The menu also includes a variety of vegetarian dishes.
