  • Hacienda San José CholulSet in a colonial hacienda, this restaurant’s biggest draw is the secluded garden. The service is also excellent.

  • Yucatecan and Caribbean traditions and ingredients are combined with sophisticated international styles by a French-trained chef: a delicate sopa de lima is a menu fixture, alongside the chef’s own creations, such as cream of poblano chili soup with roquefort.

  • Another seductive and comfortable hacienda restaurant in a garden. Xcanatún combines local and Caribbean cooking with a few French touches.

  • Hotel María de la Luz, Valladolid

This hotel has a big, well-shaded terrace on the Parque Principal, with very comfortable seats – ideal for lazy lounging while keeping an eye on all the movement in the square.

  • Spicy scrambled eggs – with peppers, chili, chopped onions, and chorizo sausage.

  • As above, but with the addition of peas, ham, and grated cheese – often served with slices of fried banana on the side.

  • A breakfast classic: tortillas topped by fried eggs, covered in spicy tomato sauce, and served with refried beans.

  • Scrambled eggs, nearly always mixed with a little onion and red pepper or, if con jamón , ham.

  • Tucked into a secluded garden near the largest of Izamal’s Mayan pyramids, this is the place to sample the full range of Yucatecan cooking – cochinita , pavo en relleno negro , and a wonderfully fragrant sopa de lima . Only open for lunch.

  • This stylish café-restaurant-gallery surveys the Quinta Avenida bustle from an airy balcony. The menu features an imaginative, Mexican-European mix.
