  • Cabañas María del Mar, Isla Mujeres

A little island of mellow comfort just behind Isla’s Playa Norte, with the most popular bar on the beach, Buho’s, attached. There’s a main building with rooms or cabaña- bungalows; some are on the small side, but they’re all attractive. Health treatments and massages are a specialty.

  • Spacious beach rooms amid a camp site; some are in a modern building, others in palm-roofed huts. There’s an enjoyable bar-restaurant (see Cabañas Paamul), and the uncrowded beach is exquisite.

  • Very popular, this big, American-owned house four blocks north of the plaza in Puerto Morelos has cabañas for two to three people, and a two-bedroom one for up to five, each with kitchenette. There’s also a pool and a palm-filled garden.

  • The best budget accommodation really near to Uxmal is provided at this very welcoming site just south of the village of Santa Elena. The Mexican-French couple who live here offer camping space (with good showers and solar power), dorm beds, and very pretty doubles, with showers, in cabins. Meals, equally a bargain, are also available.

  • Caribe Internacional, Cancún

This 80-room hotel is in one of the liveliest parts of Ciudad Cancún, near the market and next to Av Yaxchilán’s “restaurant row.” Rooms are modern, simple, spacious, and bright, and there’s a good pool, making this great value in sometimes over-priced Cancún.

  • Casa de los Sueños, Isla Mujeres

A secluded and intimate “bed and breakfast” lodge toward the southern end of Isla Mujeres. Its nine spacious rooms, pool, and oceanside terrace are of contemporary Mexican style: stunning to look at and supremely comfortable.

  • All the rooms are different – some are on the beach, some are like separate little beach-houses – but all are comfortable and fitted with Mexican textiles. It’s in a delightful location, facing the placid Playa Secreto lagoon, and there’s snorkel gear for guests’ use.

  • Casa Mexilio, Mérida

This is a special guest-house in a fine old building. The hallways and eight rooms are full of traditional furniture, craft-work, and antiques, and the Mexican-American owners have added original touches, including a cave-like pool and two bars, one on the roof.

  • Once the home of an old Mérida family, this 19th-century house has been beautifully restored with seven charming, lofty-ceilinged rooms.

  • Seems small from the street, but inside is a maze of patios, gardens, and spiral staircases, leading to a leaf-shaded pool. Rooms are cosy and colorful. The friendly German owners offer packages with the Yucatek Divers school (see Tours and Special Interests).
