  • Opened in the early days of Cancún, this spacious site has the typical Club-Med range of sports facilities – enough even when the 456 rooms fill up – and youth-oriented entertainment including a techno disco.

  • The Villas Arqueológicas are a small chain of hotels at some of the ancient Mayan sites, all built in old-Mexican, hacienda style, with charming rooms and exuberant gardens. The Uxmal branch is exceptional value.

  • A small place, where the cabins all have bathrooms. It’s often booked up by fishing groups, so check ahead. The catch of the day can be enjoyed in its sand-floored restaurant.

  • Deseo, Playa del Carmen

A new landmark in Playa hotels: a sleekly minimal-ist hip hotel that looks as if it leapt straight out of a design magazine and has shot to the top as the coolest place to stay in town. It also has an equally trendy bar, Fly (see Fly, Playa del Carmen).

  • This remarkable “eco-retreat” stands in total isolation between coconut groves and a remote beach north of Celestún and is best accessed by 4-wheel drive. The cabins are comfortable and have lovely beach terraces, and there’s a good restaurant. Nature and archeological tours are a specialty.

  • Ecotel Quinta Regia, Valladolid

Built in a Neo-Colonial style with shady patios, this hotel combines a colorful Mexican rustic look with high-standard modern facilities. Lush gardens and orchards are overlooked by the best rooms. The pool is secluded, and the restaurant makes use of garden produce (see El Mexicano, Valladolid).

  • This small-sized resort is “adults only” and so mainly for couples. The atmosphere is relaxed, there’s a nice pool, and the cabaña -style rooms are spread along the beach with plenty of space and sea views.

  • Valladolid’s classic hotel occupies one of its finest old colonial houses, with rooms set around several flower-filled, elegant patios. There’s an excellent restaurant and a pool.

  • With cascades of greenery from its many balconies, the awesomely huge Coral Beach has 602 rooms and a thick catalogue of facilities, including tennis courts and its own jogging track.

  • Mérida’s premiere hotel is modern but built in an ornate French-mansion style, with a spectacular stained-glass atrium. Rooms are spacious and well-equipped.
