  • Campeche has a limited selection of hotels. This lofty 1970s building on the seafront is more comfortable inside than most. Be sure to get a room with sea view, to catch the superb sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico.

  • The laid-back Carmelina has been welcoming budget travelers for years. Arranged around a big patio, rooms are simple but cheerful. All have showers, and some even air con.

  • Hotel Cohiba, Playa del Carmen

This B&B has 14 fully-equipped rooms recently decorated in eclectic style. The multilingual staff can book diving trips, golf, and horseback riding.

  • With no challengers as the best-value place to stay near Chichén, this roadside hotel has bright rooms, a restaurant, and two pools. The owners also run a hotel in Mérida, through which bookings can be made.

  • One of Mérida’s most popular hotels, with a relaxed atmosphere. Beyond an elderly façade, the renovated rooms set around the pool are surprisingly modern and a great bargain.

  • Holbox’s best hotel is two blocks away from the main street. The Mexican-style rooms are a real pleasure: doubles and twins upstairs have balconies, suites below have terraces and kitchenettes. The French-Mexican owners are very welcoming, and there’s a great restaurant.

  • Hotel Flamingo, Cozumel

Began as a dive hotel and offers a range of packages for divers. Even if you’re not a scuba nut, it’s a comfortable place, with well-cared-for rooms and a bar and rooftop terrace-lounge.

  • The Uruguayan–Lebanese owners run this place with a distinctive professionalism and warmth. The old Mérida house has been painted in soft tropical colors, and there’s a pool and patio where generous breakfasts are served.

  • Friendly and helpful owners make the difference in this big, popular hotel. Rooms are well cared for and have such extras as air con and small fridges, and complimentary coffee is provided.

  • Pleasantly easygoing hotel on Ticul’s main square. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with good bathrooms, fans or air con, and TVs; get one overlooking the square.
