  • 1. El Mesón del Marqués, Valladolid

Valladolid’s foremost hotel also has its most distinguished restaurant, with tables around a plant-filled patio. Its versions of local specialties like pollo oriental de Valladolid (see Pollo Oriental de Valladolid) are definitive.

  • 2. Cocinas Económicas, Valladolid

Around the bazaar on the square (see Shops, Markets, and Tours) there’s a line of self-service food counters. Noisy, with lots of atmosphere, this is a great place for breakfast, and for local snacks.

  • 3. El Mexicano, Valladolid

The restaurant in the Quinta Real hotel (see Ecotel Quinta Regia, Valladolid) is cool and pretty. Its menu makes use of fresh local ingredients, including produce from the hotel garden.

  • 4. La Palapa, Chichén Itzá

A pretty terrace under a big palapa just outside the main entrance to Chichén, with enjoyable local standards like pollo pibil (chicken baked in a spicy marinade).

  • 5. Las Mestizas, Pisté

Las Mestizas is the prettiest of the restaurants along the main road in Pisté, with the most charming service. It dishes up a delicious sopa de lima (see Sopa de Lima).

  • 6. Tres Reyes, Tizimín

Tizimín is the Yucatán’s cattle capital, and so its best restaurant’s specialty is steak, often cooked in thin strips (arracheras ).

  • 7. Restaurante Isla Contoy, Río Lagartos

Under a drooping palm roof on a jetty, this little place has a water-front feel and delicious seafood cocktails full of lime and coriander.

  • 8. Restaurante Vaselina, San Felipe

A big, unfussy, barn-like place on the seafront with plain tables where you can try wonderfully fresh, fat shrimp, octopus, and conch.

  • 9. Restaurante Kinich La Guacamaya, Izamal

In a lush garden, this restaurant (open for lunch only) has a very high reputation for classic Yucatecan food, such as seafood flash-fried with garlic.

  • 10. Restaurante El Toro, Izamal

On a square near the monastery is this friendly little restaurant, with tasty Yucatecan dishes and tacos.
