1. Amigo’s B&B, Cozumel
Three cabaña -style rooms, all with kitchenettes, fridges, and terraces, set around a pool and lovely garden. It’s especially suited to families: breakfasts (included) are served in a garden palapa (palm-roofed gazebo).

2. Tamarindo, Cozumel
A lot of energy and style have been put into the house and its sheltered garden by its Mexican-French owners. Each of the five pretty rooms has its own character, there’s an open kitchen and ample breakfasts, and they have many happy clients. They also run Palapas Amaranto nearby, with self-contained suites.

3. Cabañas Puerto Morelos
Very popular, this big, American-owned house four blocks north of the plaza in Puerto Morelos has cabañas for two to three people, and a two-bedroom one for up to five, each with kitchenette. There’s also a pool and a palm-filled garden.

This B&B has 14 fully-equipped rooms recently decorated in eclectic style. The multilingual staff can book diving trips, golf, and horseback riding.

5. Posada Sirena, Punta Allen
Punta Allen is about the most beachcomberish destination imaginable, and this guest house hits the appropriate note, with a stay-as-long-as-you-want feel from owner Serena, a real character. Her two cabins have kitchens and the essential hammocks. She can arrange fishing and diving.

6. Macanché, Izamal
Izamal is a tranquil town in any case, but the walled garden that contains this B&B, run by the same owners as Hacienda San Antonio Chalanté, is especially soothing. Little bungalows are dotted about the garden, each imaginatively decorated; one has a kitchen.

This is a special guest-house in a fine old building. The hallways and eight rooms are full of traditional furniture, craft-work, and antiques, and the Mexican-American owners have added original touches, including a cave-like pool and two bars, one on the roof.

Once the home of an old Mérida family, this 19th-century house has been beautifully restored with seven charming, lofty-ceilinged rooms.
