  • 1. Golf

Golfers on the Riviera have a choice of two championship-level courses at Cancún, one in Playacar and one at Puerto Aventuras. Hotels can book greens for you. There is also a private club north of Mérida, which can be booked through hotels.

  • 2. Fishing

Conditions for deep-sea and inshore fishing are outstanding, and the lagoons south of the Riviera by Ascension Bay are a must for fly-fishing fans. The peak deep-sea fishing season is March–June.

  • 3. Sailing, Windsurfing, and Kayaking

The best places to rent boats are Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. Hotels may have dinghies for guests. Windsurfing is at its finest around Isla Mujeres and Akumal, and the best kayaking is around Puerto Morelos, Punta Solimán, or Tres Ríos (see Eco-Parks and Theme Parks).

  • 4. Tennis

Many Riviera resort hotels have tennis courts. In Cancún, the hotels Krystal and Omni have courts open to non-residents, and the Club de Golf Cancún has two courts.

  • 5. Cycling

The most attractive places to get around by bike are Cancún, Isla Mujeres, Tulum, and Valladolid, where there’s a lovely cycle path to Cenote Dzitnup. Many Cancún hotels have bikes, and there are rental shops in the other three destinations.

  • 6. Horseback Riding

You can take group treks at Rancho Loma Bonita, near Puerto Morelos, Rancho Buenavista on Cozumel, and at Tres Ríos and Xcaret (see Playa del Carmen: Xcaret, Eco-Parks and Theme Parks).

  • 7. Parasailing

Soar above Cancún with the “Skyrider” from Aqua World (see Aqua World, Cancún). More basic parasailing operations are found along Cancún beach and at Playa del Carmen.

  • 8. Skydiving

Sky Dive Playa will give you the long-distance view of the Riviera as you plummet as a “tandem,” on the back of an experienced instructor, or on your own if you have skydiving experience.

  • 9. Air Tours

Aerosaab, at Playa del Carmen, offers aerial sightseeing tours over the Riviera, Chichén Itzá, and other parts of the Yucatán, for around $150 per person.

  • 10. Jungle Tours

Playa-based ATV Explorer lets you race through the woods on four-wheel ATVs (All-Terrain Vehicles). Alltournative offers group trips by truck, jeep, and kayak.
