Chicago

Big-city sophistication combined with small-town hospitality create the perfect blend in this, the Mid west’s largest city. Chicago’s influential architecture, cuisine for every budget and taste, great shopping, diverse ethnic neighborhoods, and outstanding museums are reason enough for a visit. And the icing on the cake? The city boasts a lakefront and park system that are as beautiful as they are recreational.

  • The perfect, low-key spot for getting messy with thick, saucy barbecue ribs. A back patio opens during warm weather.

  • Large portions of delicious meals served by an energetic, friendly and helpful wait staff. Time it right and while you are waiting for your meal to arrive, catch a dance class upstairs!

  • Though off-the-beaten club path, the family-owned Rosa’s is beloved citywide for its support of local artists such as blues harpist Sugar Blue and the genuine welcome by its owners, Tony Mangiullo and his mother Rosa. The latter sometimes cooks for the patrons of this simple tavern.

  • A young, preppy set packs this neighborhood bar for its antique décor, cozy fireplace, poppy dance tunes, pool table, and, in summer, backyard beer garden.

  • Its Italian cooking isn’t daring but Rosebud’s convivial vibe is hard to resist. Long waits for tables are common.

  • A spirited taste of Russia, where the vodka flows freely and the beef stroganoff is a crowd-pleaser.

  • Daniel H. Burnham designed this elegant high-rise in 1904: its carved building signs are from Chicago’s days as a railroad hub. The ground level houses the Chicago Architecture Foundation (see Chicago Architecture Foundation Shop).

  • Schubas Tavern & Harmony Grill

Twenty-somethings dress down for beer, live music, and a great restaurant that packs in crowds, especially on the patio during warm-weather weekends.

  • After 18 years away, a hipper Sears returned to State Street in 2000 offering five levels of everything from tools to toddler outfits.

  • Sears Tower measures the height from ground to roof – a staggering 1,450 ft (440 m). Designed by Chicago firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Lovely views over Chicago.
