Costa Blanca

Sun, sea and sand are excellent reasons to visit the Costa Blanca, but its attractions don’t stop there. Inland, you can explore magnificent Natural Parks, wild sierras and remote hill villages, or visit historic towns with fascinating museums and a wealth of fabulous architecture. The engaging capital cities of Alicante (Alacant) and Murcia are crammed with great shops and tapas bars, and a string of lively resorts along the coast offers splendid beaches, fantastic nightlife and plenty of opportunities for fun. Best of all, there’s always a secret cove or rugged cape to be discovered if the crowds get too much.

  • Gata de Gorgos

The little inland village of Gata de Gorgos is crammed with shops devoted to traditional wicker and straw crafts, from garden furniture to straw baskets and wonderful floppy hats.

  • This market features local crafts (particularly wicker furniture – (see Gata de Gorgos)), as well as food stalls.

  • Murcian gazpachos are thick stews, unlike the popular chilled Andalucian soup of the same name. This one is made with rabbit and vegetables, and is served hot.

  • One of the best restaurants in Spain, Girasol has a romantic setting in the hills above Moraira.

  • Girasol, Moraira

In this mecca for gourmets, with exquisite views over the hills and coast, chef Joachim Koerper prepares impeccable, award-winning Mediterreanean cuisine using the finest local produce.

  • Modern, clean, family apartments, lovely communal pool, highly recommended.

  • The famous La Manga Club (see Golf) has three championship courses, open to all on payment of green fees. The nearby Las Lomas Village and Spa (see Las Lomas Village and Spa, Los Belones) also has a golf course.

  • With its year-round sunshine and mild temperatures, it’s hardly surprising that the Costa Blanca is one of the top golfing destinations in Europe. There are scores of courses, of which the best known is probably the luxurious La Manga Club, with three championship courses.

  • Typical features: elaborate masonry and woodwork, pointed arches and exterior flying buttresses.

  • Join the locals at the busy bar for great tapas, or sit down in the traditional dining room and dine on tasty regional rice dishes.
