Costa Blanca

Sun, sea and sand are excellent reasons to visit the Costa Blanca, but its attractions don’t stop there. Inland, you can explore magnificent Natural Parks, wild sierras and remote hill villages, or visit historic towns with fascinating museums and a wealth of fabulous architecture. The engaging capital cities of Alicante (Alacant) and Murcia are crammed with great shops and tapas bars, and a string of lively resorts along the coast offers splendid beaches, fantastic nightlife and plenty of opportunities for fun. Best of all, there’s always a secret cove or rugged cape to be discovered if the crowds get too much.

  • Traditional – and wonderfully fresh – seafood is the speciality at this welcoming restaurant. There’s a flower-filled terrace for hot summer nights.

  • La Plaza, Altea

Live jazz, blues and soul are on the programme at this mellow cocktail bar on the prettiest square in the village.

  • La Puerta Falsa, Murcia

La Puerta Falsa is a classic on the Murcian music scene, a relaxed, bohemian spot which features live acts from Tuesday to Satuday nights. The music on offer spans everything from jazz, soul and blues to hip-hop and tango. There are also poetry readings and tertúlias (discussion groups).

  • This sleepy medieval village offers little visitor accommodation aside from this large campsite, set among trees close to the river. As well as tent and caravan pitches, it rents out cabins. Facilities include bar, restaurant, supermarket and laundry.

  • Overlooking the beautiful coves of Las Rotes, and on the fringes of the fabulous Montgó Natural Park, this family-run hotel has rooms and self-catering bungalows, most with views of the sea or the mountains. There’s a small gym, a pool, tennis courts and a restaurant.

  • A popular tapas bar in the old quarter, with a wide variety of delicious tapas to sample. Wash down with a robust local wine.

  • Overlooking the prestigious La Sella golf course in the foothills of the Montgó Natural Park, this is one of the most luxurious resorts in the whole region. The spa is one of the finest in Spain.

  • La Sirena, Petrer (Petrel)

Its elegant decor and magnificent regional cuisine have made La Sirena one of the top restaurants in the Costa Blanca. There’s an affordable lunchtime menú del día .

  • This atmospheric tapas bar on a lively street is permanently packed. It serves a great array of fresh tapas, accompanied by an excellent wine list featuring lots of good local wines.

  • La Tapa

A simple, buzzy tapas bar on one of Murcia’s liveliest squares. There’s plenty of choice, and you can sit out on the terrace to watch the action.
