  • Club admission prices usually include one drink, so make sure that you hang on to your ticket.

  • Murcia’s smart casino is located in its fanciest hotel, the Rincón de Pepe (see NH Rincón de Pepe, Murcia City). You can gamble away your holiday money at blackjack, american roulette, french roulette and poker, or just stick to the slot machines. As for all the Costa Blanca casinos, the dress code is smart-casual, and you’ll need your passport. If you can still afford it, finish your evening in the hotel’s excellent restaurant (see Rincón de Pepe, Murcia).

  • This classic rock bar has live concerts on Friday and Saturday nights, featuring jazz, blues and old-fashioned rock’n’roll. It’s right on the seafront in the old town.

  • KM Disco Garden

One of several mega-clubs on the Carretera Alicante-Valencia (others include Pachá, Manssion and Penélope), KM has room for 5,000 people. The laser shows are spectacular (see KM, Benidorm).

  • KM is one of Benidorm’s best-known mega-clubs, featuring some of Spain’s top DJs spinning everything from Spanish pop to the latest dance tracks. Also on this strip are Penélope, Pachá, and Manssion.

  • House and techno keep the party going until dawn at La Llum, another of Xàbia’s popular discos.

  • La Plaza, Altea

Live jazz, blues and soul are on the programme at this mellow cocktail bar on the prettiest square in the village.

  • La Puerta Falsa, Murcia

La Puerta Falsa is a classic on the Murcian music scene, a relaxed, bohemian spot which features live acts from Tuesday to Satuday nights. The music on offer spans everything from jazz, soul and blues to hip-hop and tango. There are also poetry readings and tertúlias (discussion groups).

  • Lennon’s is a big favourite with the under-25s, and the dance floor (playing high-energy dance music) is always heaving at weekends.

  • Popular with tourists and locals alike, this pretty café-bar sits right on the pebbly beach. Dine on simple Mediterranean dishes, or just enjoy a cocktail out on the terrace.
