  • A classic in Xàbia, this club is always packed out on summer weekends. Resident and guest DJs play house, techno and a bit of Spanish pop to get the crowd going.

  • This taverna is more than a tapas bar. Housed in a handsome 19th-century mansion, there are always temporary art exhibitions, and live music (usually jazz or blues) is a permanent fixture during the summer months.

  • Pachá, Torrevieja

There’s an outpost of Pachá in almost every party town on the Med; this one attracts Spanish and international DJs, who keep the lively young crowd dancing until dawn.

  • An outpost of the celebrated international club, Pachá offers a great night out in Torrevieja. Music is provided by an excellent line-up of Spanish and international DJs. A young crowd keeps the place buzzing until very late.

  • Altea’s main cultural centre features regular performances of opera, zarzuela (typical Spanish operetta), theatre dance and classical music, as well as jazz, flamenco and pop concerts.

  • The beachfront outpost of the mega-club Penélope (see Penélope, Benidorm), this is an elegant bar-cum-club, where you can sip a cocktail and watch the crowds flow along the seafront. The action starts late, when the music hots up and the go-gos get going.

  • Penélope, Benidorm

One of the coolest clubs in Benidorm, with a perfect beachfront location, this is a great place to start the night. If you decide to stick around, things begin to hot up, with top DJs, go-go dancers and a slick, well-dressed crowd.

  • This colourful, friendly bar is popular with locals of all ages. Resident DJs raise the tempo at weekends, when it packs out. There are special theme nights throughout the summer.

  • Boys beware: Spanish women are usually surrounded by protective boyfriends or brothers.

  • Revival is one of the most popular discos on the “techno route” on the outskirts of Alicante, but be warned, it’s for committed dance fans only; it keeps going non-stop from Saturday night right through until Monday morning.
