  • Val de Segura (Drive)

This drive follows the Segura River from the cosmopolitan city of Murcia to the country town of Calasparra. Along the way, take time out at Archena’s pretty spa (good for lunch and a dip in the pool), then meander through the green valley of Ricote up to historic Cieza, past the lake of Alfonso XIII, which attracts many birds, finishing up among the rice fields of Calasparra.

  • This pretty, purple, cliff-dwelling flower thrives in damp, salty conditions.

  • Don’t swim if a red flag is flying, and be cautious if you see a yellow flag. A green flag means it is safe to swim.

  • Ensure you bring an adequate water supply, particularly when staying on remote beaches.

  • Many beaches, particularly those in the cities, have special ramps for wheelchair access. The tourist office will have details.

  • These tusked, shaggy-coated mammals are common in most of the forested inland regions of the Costa Blanca.

  • Rosemary, thyme and lavender scent the scrubby slopes, particularly around the Montgó Natural Park.

  • Windsurfing

Sailboards for windsurfing can be hired at almost every beach on the Mar Menor. Beginners will find the quiet inland sea a good place to learn; more advanced windsurfers can brave the Mediterranean.

  • Take a tour of the bodegas in the delightful wine towns of Monóvar, Jumilla and Yecla (see Wine Towns). Lost in a sea of vines, this drive is at its best in the late summer or early autumn just before harvest. Begin at sleepy Monóvar and finish in Yecla, the largest and prettiest of the three.

  • Xàtiva’s lofty castle offers beautiful views over the tranquil mountain town, with its tiled rooftops and slender spires, and out across endless mountains fading into the distance.
