  • Rincón de Pepe, Murcia

The plushest restaurant in Murcia City, Rincón de Pepe serves exquisitely prepared fresh seafood from the Mar Menor (including a fine seafood stew with sea bass and clams), as well as locally reared meats which are grilled to perfection. Old-fashioned in the best sense, it offers impeccable service and a splendid, rather formal setting.

  • Seafood is the speciality here, cooked to traditional Galician recipes. It’s a cosy spot, with a permanent knot of locals at the bar.

  • There’s almost no room in this miniature bar in the buzzy old quarter, but you can eat your tapas out on the terrace and watch the world go by.

  • Tiffany’s

Still one of the smartest places to dine in Benidorm, with French-influenced Mediterranean cuisine, an exceptional wine list, and an international clientele.

  • Always busy thanks to its perfect seafront location, Ulía serves up simply prepared fresh fish and authentic local rice dishes like arroz a la banda on its breezy terrace.

  • A pretty, traditional restaurant with fabulous sea views and deftly prepared fresh seafood. It’s a good place to try dorada a la sal (see Seafood).

  • Locals love the old-fashioned home cooking at this big roadside eatery, including a special rice dish made with snails and rabbit.

  • This relaxed family restaurant right on the beachfront serves flavoursome rice dishes and simply prepared local fish.

  • Sleepy Villena is an unlikely setting for this sleek minimalist bar and restaurant, which serves modern versions of traditional Alicantino recipes, and wonderful desserts.

  • Set in a fragrant, pine-shaded park, Xiri offers sophisticated Mediterranean cuisine, often with an unusual Oriental twist (as, for example, in the langoustine salad with sesame dressing). Finish up with one of their spectacular desserts.
