  • 1. Diving

Most of the resorts on the Mar Menor, as well as the southern resorts of Puerto de Mazarrón and Águilas, have a number of companies offering diving courses, excursions and equipment hire. Tourist offices can provide lists.

  • 2. Snorkelling

The endless coves of the coastline (Águilas alone boasts 35) are perfect for snorkelling, but the very best place to try it is the Regional Park of Calblanque, where the protected waters are clear and the bays are secluded.

  • 3. Sailing

The Mar Menor is famous for its many marinas and excellent sailing facilities. The tranquil inland sea is ideal for beginners, and there is plenty to keep experienced sailors happy on the Mediterranean side of La Manga.

  • 4. Windsurfing

Sailboards for windsurfing can be hired at almost every beach on the Mar Menor. Beginners will find the quiet inland sea a good place to learn; more advanced windsurfers can brave the Mediterranean.

  • 5. Fishing

Fishing is very popular in Spain, but permits are usually required. Tourist information offices or local fishing tackle shops can provide information.

  • 6. Golf

The famous La Manga Club (see Golf) has three championship courses, open to all on payment of green fees. The nearby Las Lomas Village and Spa (see Las Lomas Village and Spa, Los Belones) also has a golf course.

  • 7. Horse Riding

There are several stables around the Mar Menor, including a number in Los Belones offering treks around the Regional Park of Calblanque. Tourist offices will have the details.

  • 8. Tennis

Many of the larger hotels around the Mar Menor boast tennis courts, and will usually let non-residents play for a fee. Most of the larger towns along the coast have municipal courts, which can be hired through the local tourist information office.

  • 9. Hiking

The Natural Park of Calnegre and Cabo Cope has some good hiking, but the very best walking trails can be found in the Regional Park of Calblanque. A long-distance walking path, the GR92, runs the whole length of the Costa Cálida.

  • 10. Bird-watching

The salt lakes in the Regional Park of Calblanque attract numerous birds, as do the protected salt flats around Lo Pagán, on the northern shores of the Mar Menor.
