  • 1. La Muralla

This smart tapas bar located in Murcia’s fanciest hotel (see NH Rincón de Pepe, Murcia City) is as famous for the stretch of Arabic wall incorporated into its design as for the excellence of its tapas.

  • 2. El Arco

This elegant café-bar has a huge terrace out on a graceful square, perfect for lingering over breakfast or a light lunch, even better for people-watching in the evenings.

  • 3. La Tapa

A simple, buzzy tapas bar on one of Murcia’s liveliest squares. There’s plenty of choice, and you can sit out on the terrace to watch the action.

  • 4. Pacopepe

The tapas at Pacopepe are among the best in town. Try the delicious stuffed artichokes, or one of the celebrated mushroom dishes – everything is fresh from the orchards and gardens around the city.

  • 5. Confitería Viena

Stop off for a refreshing ice cream or an ice-cold granizado (crushed ice drink), which you can take away or consume on the tiny street terrace.

  • 6. Abu Nuwas

Sink into the cushions at this magical Arabic-style tearoom and bar, where you can choose from more than 80 different infusions – plus wonderful Moroccan pastries.

  • 7. Mesón El Corral

This classic, colourfully tiled mesón on a lively square serves hearty Castilian stews and grilled meat, and the tapas bar has an excellent selection of traditional dishes.

  • 8. Pequeña Taberna Típica

The name says it all. This typical little tavern serves great Murcian specialities, with first-rate local cured sausages and hams.

  • 9. El Ahorcado Feliz

The “Happy Hanged Man” is the most unusual café in Murcia. The furniture is made up of flea-market finds; the floor is a mosaic of smashed plates and ceramics. Great for a coffee, even better for a drink.

  • 10. Jota Ele

Another local favourite, Jota Ele has excellent old-fashioned tapas, including delicious local hams and conserves, as well as smoked fish.
